Authorities were scrambling to contain an oil spill on Thursday after a container ship struck the San Francisco Bay Bridge, leaking 58,000 gallons of fuel into the ocean.

Authorities were scrambling to contain an oil spill on Thursday after a container ship struck the San Francisco Bay Bridge, leaking 58,000 gallons of fuel into the ocean.
The US Coast Guard said in a statement that approximately 8,000 gallons of bunker fuel had been recovered following the collision involving the Cosco-Busan container ship early Wednesday.
Several beaches throughout the region have been closed as slicks head toward coastal areas, the statement added.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
